25 Production Constraints to Finish a Track This Week

An eight-bar loop that has been "almost done" for a month does not need more options. It needs fewer. These 25 constraints are real cards from the ComposerDeck deck, sorted by the problem they solve, each with one concrete move you can make in the next twenty minutes.

Why constraints finish tracks

Unfinished tracks share a symptom: too many open decisions. Which reverb, which synth, whether the drop needs another layer, whether to re-record the vocal. Every open decision is a reason to open the project tomorrow instead of bouncing it today.

A constraint closes decisions. "Two effects per track, maximum" is not a creative limitation, it is a finished list of things you no longer have to think about. That is why producers who work fast tend to work with rules, and why the ones we interviewed describe their rules as the reason they ship.

The 25 cards below come straight from the deck's Production and Malus categories. They are grouped by what they fix. You do not need all of them; you need one from the group that describes your problem.

Subtract: fewer tools, better decisions

Start here if your project has forty tracks and no song.

  • 01 Production Minimalist Processing (Max 2 Effects per Track) Limit yourself to using no more than 2 effects plugins (e.g., EQ, reverb, delay) on any single track in your mix. Focus on careful selection rather than complex processing chains. Why it works: most unfinished tracks are over-processed, not under-written. Two plugins per track forces the sound choice to be right at the source.
  • 02 Production Specific Reverb Type Focus Use only one specific type of reverb (e.g., plate, spring, hall, room) for all spatial effects in your mix. Explore the character of a single reverb type as a unifying element. Why it works: one reverb is a room. Five reverbs are five rooms, and the mix never sits. Pick a plate or a small room and commit.
  • 03 Malus One Synth Only Use only one synthesizer instance for all melodic and harmonic elements (drums excluded). Why it works: every melodic and harmonic part from one synth means every part shares a character. Cohesion for free, and no time lost browsing presets.
  • 04 Malus No FX Zero FX allowed on any track. Keep it super raw and dry! Why it works: a dry mix exposes arrangement problems that effects were hiding. Fix those, and the effects you add back later will be for taste, not repair.
  • 05 Malus Monophonic You are only allowed to play one note at a time. No chords allowed for this section. Why it works: monophonic lines cannot hide behind chords. You will write a bass part and a lead that actually mean something.

Start here if everything sounds like the preset it came from.

  • 06 Production Found Sounds Composition Create a composition incorporating at least three non-traditional sound sources (recorded environmental sounds, household objects) as primary musical elements. Focus on transforming ordinary sounds into musical material. Do this: record three objects within arm's reach right now. Kick, snare, hat. Build the beat before you judge the sounds.
  • 07 Production Single Found Sound as Central Element Record a single distinctive sound from your environment and make it the central rhythmic, melodic, or textural foundation of your track. Build the composition around this unique source element. Do this: the fridge hum is a drone, the door latch is a snare. One sound, pitched and stretched, is a whole palette.
  • 08 Production Sampled Pitched Stab/Sound Find a non-pitched or uniquely timbred sound, sample it, and use it as a pitched percussive note or short melodic stab in your beat. Focus on transforming sound through pitch manipulation. Do this: a coin on a table, sampled and mapped chromatically, is a marimba nobody else owns.
  • 09 Production MPC/Sampler Chopping Workflow Compose a significant part of your beat by chopping longer samples (melodic, vocal, or drum breaks) and resequencing them, emulating an MPC or similar sampler workflow. Focus on creative recontextualization. Do this: chop a two-bar phrase into eight slices, then play the slices in a different order until a new phrase appears.
  • 10 Production Sample-Based Melodic Hook (Chopped & Pitched) Create a catchy melodic hook by chopping, pitching, and resequencing a vocal or instrumental sample. Transform existing material into something new and distinctive. Do this: take one syllable from any vocal, pitch it to your key, and write the hook with it before you write the hook with words.
  • 11 Production Abstract Vocal Chops as Rhythmic/Melodic Elements Use short, processed vocal samples (chops, stutters, pitched phrases) as rhythmic or melodic elements, not necessarily forming coherent words. Transform the human voice into musical material. Do this: record yourself saying the track title. Slice, reverse, pitch. Those are your backing vocals.
  • 12 Production Field Recording Integration (World/Soundscape) Incorporate field recordings (sounds from a specific natural or cultural environment) into your composition as a background texture or a prominent element. Connect musical and environmental sound worlds. Do this: the field recording goes under everything at low volume. Nobody hears it. Everybody feels the room.
  • 13 Malus Field Recording Record a sound with your phone right now and use it as a key instrument. Do this: right now, before reading on. Phone, thirty seconds, whatever is around you. That is the lead sound.

The red cards are Malus cards: handicaps by design. The deck adds one to your hand when you switch on Malus Mode. They are the constraints people remember.

Shape: arrangement without a blank timeline

Start here if the loop is great and the track is eight bars long.

  • 14 Production Prominent Filter Sweep Incorporate a noticeable filter sweep (low-pass or high-pass) on at least one key instrument or the master bus for dynamic effect. Use filtering as an expressive tool. Do this: automate one low-pass over sixteen bars into the drop. The sweep is the arrangement; you just wrote a build.
  • 15 Production Sidechain Compression for Rhythmic Pumping Use sidechain compression (e.g., kick triggering compressor on bass/pads) to create a rhythmic pumping or "breathing" effect. Make this technique an integral part of the groove. Do this: sidechain the pad to the kick before you add a bassline. Half the time you no longer need one.
  • 16 Production Creative Panning & Stereo Width Use panning automation and stereo placement creatively to give instruments distinct locations and create a sense of space or movement. Design the spatial field as a compositional element. Do this: pan the hats hard left, a shaker hard right, and leave the middle for kick, bass and voice. Width is space you did not have to EQ.
  • 17 Production Mix Depth & Spatial Design Focus on creating a mix with clear front-to-back depth using reverb, delay, EQ, and volume to place elements in 3D space. Design the spatial relationships between elements. Do this: three planes: dry and loud in front, a little reverb in the middle, dark and wet at the back. Every element gets one plane, no exceptions.
  • 18 Production Prominent 808 Bassline with Glide/Pitch Bends Make the main bass element a tuned 808 sound, focusing on its sub-bass frequencies, decay, and incorporating pitch glides/bends. Create an expressive bass voice. Do this: one 808, a glide time of 80 ms, and a melody made of four notes. The bass is the hook.

Texture: depth from one idea

Start here if the mix is clean, correct and boring.

  • 19 Production Lo-fi Aesthetics: Vinyl Crackle & Warm Saturation Incorporate lo-fi production elements like vinyl crackle, tape hiss, wow/flutter, and aim for a warm, analog-like saturation in your mix. Create nostalgic imperfection as a stylistic choice. Do this: crackle on the master, wow and flutter on the keys, nothing on the drums. Imperfection is a layer, not a filter over everything.
  • 20 Production Layered Synth Pads for Rich Texture Create a rich harmonic texture using at least three layered synthesizer pads with different timbres, possibly covering different frequency ranges or having varied envelopes. Focus on complementary timbral interaction. Do this: three pads, three octaves, three attack times. Play the same chord on all of them and you have a string section.
  • 21 Production Granular Synthesis Sound Design Create and incorporate a significant sound or texture using granular synthesis techniques (deconstructing sounds into tiny "grains"). Explore the timbral possibilities of this approach. Do this: freeze one note of your lead in a granular engine. That frozen texture is your intro.
  • 22 Production Single Oscillating Pitch Drone (Electronic) Create a drone element using a single synth oscillator, focusing on its timbral evolution through LFO modulation, filter changes, or effects. Explore slow timbral development. Do this: one oscillator, one filter, one LFO on the cutoff at 0.1 Hz. Leave it running under the whole track.
  • 23 Production Extreme Audio Processing / Mangling Take a conventional sound (e.g., vocal, piano) and process it with effects until it becomes almost unrecognizable and uniquely textured. Push processing to creative extremes. Do this: take the vocal, destroy it, keep 10% of it in the chorus behind the clean one. Depth without another instrument.

Commit: the part where it gets finished

Start here if you have been "almost done" for a month.

  • 24 Malus One Take Record your next part in a single take. No editing, no punching in. Keep the mistakes. Why it works: a one-take part has a beginning and an end. A comped part has neither, and neither does the track that contains it.
  • 25 Malus Speed Run You have exactly 5 minutes to lay down the entire structure of the track. Why it works: five minutes for intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, outro as empty blocks. Structure first, then you fill, and the track already exists.

Two constraints, one afternoon. Speed Run gives the track a skeleton. One Take gives every part an ending. After that, the remaining work is a mix, and a mix has a known procedure. If you want a realistic sense of how long that last stretch takes, this timeline is honest about it.
